LYRICreviews: Ryan Hurd Live At The O2 Shepherds Bush Supporting Maren Morris

Ryan Hurd has made quite the mark in Country Music this year. Having started out as a songwriter penning the songs we all love, such as Blake Shelton and Ashley Monroe’s ‘Lonely Tonight’ and Lady Antebellum’s feel-good track ‘You Look Good’ and signing with Sony Music this year to record his self-titled EP, Hurd is on track for a breakthrough 2018.

Having toured with the likes of Chase Rice and Maren Morris (his fiancé we might add!) on the UK leg of her HERO tour, we had the pleasure of attending and seeing just how much Ryan Hurd was made of and why he’s been named an ‘artist you need to know’ by Rolling Stone Country.

Hurd kicked off his set with Chasing After You that blended straight into We Do Us, a well-known and loved track off of his self-titled EP with a catchy chorus. ‘Make our own music, bang our own drum, baby ain’t nobody do it like we do us‘, Hurd had the attention of the crowd immediately, which is something that can be quite a feat for an opening act.

Hurd has a gritty, rock element to his voice, which would do well on radio here in the UK. With a heartfelt rendition of his song Hold You Back, which has a chorus fit for commercial release and songs of true country form of being all about the hometown, such as ‘Michigan’, Hurd ticks all the boxes. Watching him perform, you would never have guessed that he only signed his record deal at the beginning of this year, exuding professionalism and charm.

It was Hurd’s first time performing in the UK and he had the audience in the palm of his hand. We spoke with him whilst he was in the UK and he had only good things to say about us UK country fans. ‘There’s a huge difference, the crowds here are a listening crowd, they’re very attentive which can be very different to the states because sometimes you have to win over the audience and here they are already very attentive to the song. It’s very different in a good way, so it’s really special to play here.’ (Read full interview).

To some people’s realization during the show, Hurd has penned songs for many of the artists that we love and he performed two crowd pleasers during his set, Last Turn Home (Tim McGraw) which he wrote with Maren Morris and Eric Arjes –

And, You Look Good (Lady Antebellum) which he wrote with Hillary Lindsey. We think that Hurd should release his rock-esque version of this song, as we loved his take on the feel-good track. Have a listen below.

Hurd rounded off his set by telling the story of how he met his fiance, Maren, and penned the song Love In A Bar, which has over 19 million streams on Spotify – a huge feat for an artist breaking through; setting him up for a successful 2018.

Hurd’s personality shone throughout his set and it’s fair to say that he won over the hearts of many in London, as well as the other dates around the UK. Finishing off with a song that has a country-rock vibe off his self-titled EP, City Girl showed just how much Hurd dedicates to his craft, his vocal versatility and how he’s paving his way onto the scene with a fresh new take on country music.
